It’s a nice touch by the franchise, but I didn’t exactly leak the same blood, sweat & tears as the players.
When the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League won the championship a few years ago, they gave me a ring as well. My role? The PA announcer. I announced goals & assists, got the crowd into the game, chirped the refs & basically just tried to take the other team off their game with some colourful commentary. Translation: Screaming my face off for 3 hours to the point of losing my voice. Sometimes my voice was squeaking by player intros.
I got fitted for the ring (quite the honour), but even though it fits perfectly, I’ll never wear it. It’s in the man cave as we speak in the trophy case. As proud as I am of the team and my tiny role in it, the ring is massive. Can you imagine I walk around with this thing?! Inevitably I’m getting asked questions. “Obviously you aren’t a player?!” NO “Coach?!” NO “ GM?!” NO!! Then why the hell do you have one of these on your hand?! Lol Well played. I still love it though.
