Radio is about connecting to the audience through things that are important to them…

Hosting a radio show is very much a daily exercise in a) connecting with your target audience about topics that matter to them; & b) using your platform to mirror what’s going on in your city. The more local a morning show is, the more relatable it will be.

One component of this that has always been important to me, is helping fellow Calgarians that need a hand up. It’s sometimes hard to imagine in a city as prosperous as Calgary, that this exists.

When I moved to Calgary for the second time in 2011, I immediately connected with the Calgary Humane Society & Ronald McDonald House & asked them to be partners on-air. For an audience made up of families, talking about kids & pets was a pretty good starting place.

Shortly after, I became a Big Brother to a wonderful kid that needed a mentor in his life. I have been working closely with Dreams take Flight for 11 years; it’s an amazing organization that gives the most deserving kids a special day at Disney. Also, my son & I have picked up food hampers for the Calgary Food Bank for the past 11 years.

The more you dig in with your community, the more your audience understands how much this city means to you. People listening to your show really love their city and will also hopefully share in the passion of helping others. Caring breeds compassion - we should all be like the Grinch and have our hearts grow three sizes in a day 💓
