The busy crowds of Boxing Day

mookiew4

The yearly tradition I absolutely love is our little Banff getaway right after Christmas.

Christmas is awesome, but no matter how you do it, you always leave feeling stressed and overwhelmed. You either feel like you bought too much/not enough, stressed because you left it to the last minute etc.

In my family, I always take care of the meal, which means a big day of shopping the day before, that usually includes a grocery store or 3 to track down a turkey. Prep for the big meal starts the day before and cooking is most of Christmas Day. By the time the big day is done, we're all ready for a break.

We find a simple hotel in Banff that has a table for board games, a tv for the world juniors, a fireplace, and, most importantly, one that takes dogs. Nature walks, hot tubs and the odd meal out is on the schedule, but nothing too planned out so we can enjoy the stay and live in the moment. The problem is, it always goes way too quick.

This year was the first year my son was of age, so I introduced him to the best part of the Waldhaus Pub at Banff Springs, the Legendary beer boot. Translation, a giant boot shaped glass that holds 5 beers. He's not a big drinker, but I was impressed. He handled it very well. I'll take this over the chaotic malls on Boxing Day anytime.
